I need to jam some fruit and needed more pint jars than I had on hand. Unfortunately, the Kerr and Ball glasses weren't available fast enough, so I tried those. They are taller and narrower than standard half pint cans. This means that the bands and rings are not interchangeable with standard cans. It also means that the funnel I use to pour the jam into the jar doesn't really fit. The funnel should fit easily into the top of the jar without touching the inside of the jar when it's up. This allows jam to be poured into the funnel without touching the top of the jar, making jar sealing easier. My funnel is very narrow. It cannot be put in a glass without leaving marks on the rim of the glass. To remove the filter after filling the jar, I have to hold the jar with hot jam and rotate the funnel. And without burning your hands. For me this means that glasses cannot be reused. The sealing on the lids is sloppy and is on the outside edge, not just where the lid should rest against the rim of the jar. to protect the cans during transport, as each can fits into a matching nest. It takes up more space than regular can boxes. The additional plastic packaging for the cans does not appear to be recyclable.
