Review on πŸ”¦ Efficient Dietz #76 Original Oil Burning Lantern (Green): An Authentic Lighting Solution by Beth Walker

Revainrating 5 out of 5

You can't beat Dietz flashlights for reliability, economy, safety and just plain cool!

I have had several Dietz flashlights over the years and keep coming back because they just work. I picked the Model 76 because it's the perfect size to keep in the bin I take with me when I go camping. I use 2 of these lights as a camping light solution. I've found I prefer the dim illumination of a pair of kerosene lanterns to the brightness of propane and liquid fuel lanterns. Of course, these lights can't fully illuminate the entire campsite, but they provide enough light to do what you need to do. Don't mess around with fuel - use good old kerosene: K-1, Klean Heat, kerosene lamp. Oil (high purity kerosene). Just because you CAN use olive oil, canola oil, citronella oil doesn't mean you HAVE TO. These thick oils will clog the fuse and create unwanted combustion by-products and soot. You won't get as much light either. NEVER use volatile fuels such as gasoline, kerosene, spirits, alcohol, etc. in a kerosene lamp when doing this. You have a potential fire hazard. Pros: Compact Inexpensive: (yes they are made in China) Buy a pair! Economical: Burns 11 hours from a single 8 ounce tank. Jet lights have very little odor (depending on the type of fuel used) and nice, soft lighting. Very easy maintenance: fill the tank, clean the ball, trim the wick and replace the wick. There are no mechanical parts that could break. (with proper care these lights can last for decades, in some cases over a hundred years) Excellent emergency lighting (make sure you have adequate ventilation if using indoors) Cons: Liquid fuel storage Propane Much less light than a propane mantle lantern I always return to these lanterns as emergency and camping lighting. You can't beat their value!
