Review on 12TB HGST - WD Ultrastar DC HC520 Helium HDD Review: High-Capacity SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drive by Rudy Barron

I reject this: Data retention

First, I blame myself. I thought I studied the drives before I pulled the trigger. I ended up going with the HGST brand because it got good reviews and the helium technology seemed like a good buy. This would be my first drive in my NAS that I built. I didn't realize that this is POWER DISABLED technology. I didn't know what it was until they delivered it to me. I couldn't get it to work. For those who don't know, this was introduced a few years ago and requires a special motherboard to be able to remotely disable or reset the drive. For us mere mortals, there is a workaround by unplugging the 3rd pin to get the drive to work. I ordered kapton tape and sealed the 3rd contact. When I restart the PC and go into the bios, I see the hard drive. Then I start Windows 10 and the drive is not found. I go to disk management, there is no disk. I boot back into bios and the drive is no longer listed. I turn off the machine for a few minutes and boot again and it's the same cycle. I just ordered a Molex to SATA connector that bypasses the power supply on pin 3 (which is what the HGST website recommends). Still no luck. It's been almost two weeks and I still can't get started. If you don't need to turn off the drive, I would avoid this drive. Now I'm stuck with a $330 brick if I don't get it back. Very, very upset.
