Great knife with poor design

I bought this knife because I was tired of using "homemade" knives in the kitchen. For the $25 I paid, this is a surprisingly good tool, if a bit heavy once you care. In hindsight, if I had paid more attention to the design of the knife than the price and rushed to get something decent, I would have moved on. The knife is decently balanced, although it's likely to be a little heavy for some, the extra weight makes long slicing jobs a breeze, and the handle is fairly comfortable to grip or pinch. The steel isn't very hard, so I won't hold my edge for more than a day of hard work (the factory edge is pretty sharp, but chipped a bit after the first day of use). The advantage of this is that it gets razor sharp very quickly, even on a mediocre stone, and lasts quite a while if sharpened sporadically. The main problem with this knife is the ridge that runs the full length of the blade and keeps the heel of the edge from making contact with the cutting board (which prevents cutting and tends to bulge the board) with just a few sharpenings. Finally, the "finger guard" that comes with this knife is utterly useless. For your own sake, learn how to use a knife properly without a crutch. I'd rather have a slightly better shaped bead than this unnecessary waste of steel that only serves to encourage sluggish technique and scratch the knife.
