Review on πŸ“ Grizzly H5886 Length Divider 12 Inch: Precision Measuring Tool for Accurate Length Division by Aaron Kindler

Not bad for the price - comes with disgusting oil

If you want the highest precision, quality and German workmanship then this compass is not for you. If you're looking for a tool that won't break the bank, gets the job done, and is likely to last, then this is it. First the measurements: Compass: length 31.5 cm (12.4 inches), length 30.5 cm (12 inches). from the point to the center of the axis. It opens at an angle of just under 90 degrees, and the maximum distance between dots (i.e. the radius of the circle you want to draw) is 38 cm (15 inches). Because the pen holder is on the outside, the maximum pen radius is just over 39 cm (15.5 inches). The pencil stand fits a standard pencil with very little play. Something much larger, like a carpenter's pencil or sharpie, won't work. It adjusts to a very small size, allowing even a very thin pen or pencil to be held securely in place. Now for the quality of the tool, it's steel and seems accurate enough for carpentry, woodworking and similar jobs. . However, it is not a "high quality" or "accurate" instrument. The points fit quite well, but not perfectly. Machining marks are clearly visible throughout the tool. The mechanism is quite workable, but not too smooth, and the thumbscrew holes are slightly crooked. The pen holder is not perfectly aligned. Note that none of this affects the functionality of the tool - it draws round circles with no problem. The tool was covered in foul smelling dark oil - I'm pretty sure it was used motor oil. I had to spend some time wiping it down with mineral spirits. Overall, it's pretty good for the price and it does the job well, but it's not the kind of tool you brag about to your friends (if you have friends who are tool-impressed).
