The burr is important. Gives the finish a characteristic shine. The "art" lies with them in setting the burrs and sharpening them. This set comes with a burr polisher but lacks a carbon steel edge to make burrs razor sharp. Practically, this is a tool of limited use to me. For hardwood only, I don't remember them being used for softwood. I think there is a risk of grain being pulled up. I use scrapers a few times a year for a premium finish. The scrapers themselves are made from high-quality, high-carbon tool steel, which is good for a razor blade. I like bluing to prevent rust. As a side note, they will rust.
