Sooner or later you will need them.
The manual that came with my generator set says around 1000 hours without a ring/valve replacement. If you run 8 hours a day, you'll get there in about 18 weeks. It will take most of us years to accumulate that many hours. Either way, a shim kit is cheap enough to have on the shelf when you need it.
