Review on πŸ”Œ MakerHawk USB Load Tester: 150W 200V 20A Resistor, Adjustable Constant Current Battery Capacity Module. Intelligent Discharge Resistance Power Tester by Phillip Ellis

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great little power meter. A few notes:

Made a laser cut acrylic case for this device and added a cheap low voltage disconnect device. I really like this unit. Yesterday I checked several battery packs and measured all without errors. A few notes: - The 20A advertisement is somewhat misleading. The spec you want to stick to with this device is the power rating. With this design and heatsink it is rated at 150 watts. So you have to divide the power by the voltage of your batteries to get the peak discharge you should be aiming for. For example, if I have a 14.6V battery, 150/14.6 = 10.27A (10.27A is the maximum you would set for discharge). The only time you would discharge the claimed full 20A is when the battery was at 7.5V. I found the device to be fairly accurate down to 0.1V. On the other hand, the undervoltage lockout I bought is disabled at 200mV. As long as you test and know the offset, you're good to go. Just notice the difference - the display is large and easy to read - I find the one-button programming easy to use. Just need to play around a bit - mosfet is rated for 50A on this device. If changed, it could be a nearly 300-watt meter. Just add a water CPU cooler. I think a big CPU heatsink might damage this board as it is thin. My only complaints. - No chassis but I made one - Needs slightly thicker FR4 (PCB thickness) - Seriously why only low voltage alarm? Add a trip relay. People will pay more for the low voltage cutoff built into this chassis. Not just an exit terminal. Potentiometers are CHEAP. Too bad he used better pots but at this price. hard to complain! - PCB layout is not good. Functional, but not chassis-friendly. They seem to have cheap legs in mind as the leg mounting holes are positioned as if someone were to throw darts while stepping back. for $45 it's a damn functional kit. The price makes it easy to ignore some of my complaints. Could it be much better? YES SIR. But it is what it is and I am happy with the purchase. I would buy again. Does exactly what I want.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Unbeatable price
