When I received my replacement sink cartridge (Danco 88197, VA-4) it was listed as 'customers also bought this', which I did. But I didn't need it. The springs etc are all inside the cartridge which is a largely sealed unit. When they go bad I just swap out the whole cartridge (which is plastic - I'm not sure you can still open it up to change the springs without damaging them).
