I cut off the rounded tip that is visible from the outside as a plug when I am not allowed to wear a nose ring. Nobody noticed that I still have a hairpin. Even with the top cut off, I can easily slide it in and out of my nose! Doesn't irritate my nose at all. At best, it looks like an oversized filling on your nose.

I usually cut the end off for two reasons. First, the pearl ends up being quite rough when trying to insert it into a piercing hole. Second, it's a bit long, but for good reason, because people have different nose widths. For me my nose is narrower and it will press against the inside of my nostril if I don't cut it short!
