You cannot adjust the partition when there is water in the tank. I did this and within a week my tank ruptured. I bought a new tank and installed the separator easily and without any problems. This is such a great tank separator. If you read some reviews of power supplies you will see that people complain that after a year some of them start falling apart leaving holes in the mesh. That will never change. It is a strong, hard, highly transparent acrylic. At worst, it could get scratched over time. But it will never fall apart and just miss the fish.
