gemstone identification kit

I used them as soon as they came up. The magnifying glass is larger than the one I used which makes it easier to use. With a microscope it is easy to distinguish a ruby from a spinel. The Chelsea filter helped identify some emeralds. The construction seems solid, which is a good thing as I plan on using it a lot.

Pros
  • handy item
Cons
  • not bad

Bait and Switch

3 piece set does not match the picture. I received a chrome plated magnifying glass. Chrome-plated loupes can illuminate the examined stones, especially diamonds, with white light. You can find chrome plated magnifying glasses for around $3.99 on Amazon if you're really looking for them, but I find them worse than useless.

Pros
  • Dichroscope is an invaluable tool for distinguishing specific stones from similar ones
Cons
  • Not sure

Great price for a good set

I am very happy with my new tool set. I'm learning to identify gemstones and use them for work at home. The magnifying glass works fine. I have yet to try the Chelsea filter on other stones but the dichroscope works just as well as the one I use in class. I only need a few more items and can identify just about any gem. I might be a bit fanatic but I really enjoy seeing different colors of stones with a dichroscope, especially when they are really different like purple and yellow.

Pros
  • Retail price around $200 at GIA store. For a limited time
Cons
  • Cord is shorter than other picks

Funny little set

. for Chelsea filters as shown. This is a fun set for lovers. The magnifier is very well made, heavy, but mine seems screwed in too tight, difficult to plug in and out. The dichroscope is great for distinguishing colors on larger stones, but only color. I tried this on a smaller iolite and found it difficult to focus on the stone, but on a large sapphire table had no problem displaying two different colors in the top and bottom windows, the scope seems difficult to focus, maybe I did just…

Pros
  • Identify about 85 percent of all gemstones with this set. Guide to using 3 simple gemstone identification tools.
Cons
  • . Weak
