Easy to Adjust, Easy to Use.

This spokeshave was fashioned similar to the shaves of the 1800's. A simple blade, a toe piece, and handles. The knurled knobs allow adjustment of the "mouth" opening, and the screws on the toepiece adjust the shaving thickness. If you're new to this style, loosen the screws on the toepiece, slip a business card underneath, and tighten the screws. You'll get nice thick shavings to "hog off" a lot of wood in a hurry. Now readjust the toepiece for the thickness of a sheet of typing paper, and…

Pros
  • Came sharp and ready to use. Well made with a good feel and heft. Expect it to last a long time.
Cons
  • Bulky design makes it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces

Heavy and very adjustable

Like most cutting tools, some honing and polishing needed. Has a good heft, can be set up to work very well. It does require some learning to adjust the blade forward and back, and to position the front plate up and down to adjust thickness of cut. Expensive but well worth it for lovers of hand tools.

Pros
  • Same as in store. Came ready to use. Quality. Happy with purchase.
Cons
  • May require significant effort to apply enough pressure for effective shaving

Depth Adjuster a Poor Design

It is a nice tool, except for the adjustable foot on the front that determines the depth of cut. This foot is held in place by two screws you must (1) loosen with a screwdriver, (2) grab the foot with your hand and slide it up or down, and (3) tighten the screws to hold the foot in place. For the money the foot should have been continuously adjustable up and down through the use of bolts that move the foot up and down and lock the foot in place. I am disappointed with the current method of…

Pros
  • Robust body, excellent blade
Cons
  • Blade is prone to chipping and cracking

Very nice tool - my new review

Comes well packaged in a wooden storage box. It was polished, sharp and ready to set up. I used a piece of paper on a flat surface to set the depth of cut.

Pros
  • Christmas present
Cons
  • Blade may rust easily with prolonged exposure to moisture

Very Nice, very Sharp

I have only played with this some and still learning how to make the proper adjustment but it is a very nice tool. Sharp right out of the box. Has a great weight and a great feel in the hands. I know I will be using this soon.

Pros
  • Incredible tool. Best one I've owned and use it constantly.
Cons
  • Lacks precision in shaving uneven or curved surfaces

Almost good. in my review

The adjustment of both the blade and throat are by the "loosen and tap” method. The two sets of screws -one set knurled, the other slotted- are clamps, not adjusters. The machining was decent quality, except the foot and the flat of the blade appeared to have been hand-dressed together, to make them look shiny and sharp (both showed grain running across the tool, not in line, as a proper pre-sharpening should appear). Both were slightly un-flat. Flattening the small blade was a chore. After…

Pros
  • Produces fine, smooth surfaces
Cons
  • May require additional equipment or accessories to achieve optimal results

Pros
