I use it to inspect small parts of dental instruments that I inspect for repair purposes. I purchased the AmScope 3.5X-180X INSPECTION TRINOCULAR STEREO ZOOM MICROSCOPE along with the LED light ring. I have found that halogen bulbs get very hot on both the bottom and top and do not produce enough light to view various subjects at full magnification. Since the scope is new, original halogen lamps and bulbs will smell like burnt plastic due to the amount of heat they generate. I think the smell will go away over time. This is a fantastic flashlight from Amscope, no doubt the quality is top notch. It is bright, evenly illuminated and almost shadow-free. This makes it ideal for a microscope. In my experience, the light is also white at around 6200K, i.e. very white. When soldering printed circuit boards, strong reflections from the solder can sometimes occur. I use this LED light ring with my stereo microscope and find it indispensable. The ambient light is too variable when working with a stereo microscope on circuit boards with small components. This ring of light allows me to direct the light to where I'm looking and adjust the brightness as needed using the rheostat on the controller.
