This is a sponge filter. Yes. Like everyone else. But they are very well made. High quality, comfortable sponges, beautiful and heavy base. Not cheap plastic at all. After doing a little research and finding out how great sponge filters are, I had to get my hands on them. I'm new to betta fish owners and hated the filter in my 3 gallon tank. So I switched to this filter and so far so good. My betta feels great and it's good that I don't get in the way of any other filter. I use these tiny 5 gallon sponge filters in my 2 gallon nano shrimp tank. They are easy to hide behind plants and tree stumps. I don't use a riser or modify it for air stones like some people insist.
