Description of Midas Binoculars: Waterproof and Durable for Bird Watching - Athlon Optics Gauges

ED Glass - ED glass gives you an image with little or no chromatic fringe so the final result brings a clearer and sharper image to your eyes. ESP Dielectric Coating is a multi layer prism coating that reflects over 99% of the light to your eyes bringing you a clear, bright image that displays accurate color reproduction. Advanced FMC - Advanced Fully Multi-Coated lenses gives you better light transmission to bring optimum brightness and true color across the entire light spectrum. Argon Purged - Argon purging gives you better waterproofing and thermal stability and Field of view Angular -8.1 degree. Long eye relief can be particularly important for eyeglass wearers because longer eye relief allows them to still see the entire field of view.Field Of View M @1000 METERS:144 m.

Okay, but there are a few minor caveats

Pros: Wide field of view; good pupillary distance; sharpness throughout the image is above average; relatively close focus; declared water resistance; Tripod mount (hidden under the screwed Athlon logo on the front of the hinge); good resolution - honestly no better than a pair of 40 year old compact 8x Nikons I've compared them to. but these Nikons were known for their sharpness, and the Athlons outperform the Nikons in terms of field of view, low-light performance and eye relief, so in most…

Pros
  • Argon Purge - Argon Purge offers better waterproofing and thermal stability, plus a -8.1 degree field of view angle
Cons
  • Only available in black

Absurd budget optics.

I was skeptical of all the rave reviews; This is a real review, I paid with my money. Also, within 10 minutes of placing my order, I found an amazing deal on the best Athlon baskets for not much more money. And they are made in Japan. So I wanted to send Midas back and tell them I made a mistake. Then I made the mistake of opening the package and taking a look. My god, the clarity was something else! I've always had mediocre binoculars at best and felt my naked eye worked better. Why bother…

Pros
  • Long eye relief can be especially important for eyeglass wearers, as longer eye relief allows them to see the full field of view. Field of view M @1000 METER: 144 m
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.

GREAT optics but questionable quality control

Much better (brighter, warmer, sharper) look compared to my 10 year old Nikon Monarch ATB 8x42. However, do check your binoculars as soon as you receive them to confirm the minimum focusing distance because the first Midas 8x42 that arrived had a focus point at >3m so we brought it back. The replacement focuses at 2m (meets specs) which is good, but the eyepieces had water spots (how do they get there when it's new?!) which were 99% easily removed with my old LensPen The four pairs, The ones

Pros
  • ESP Dielectric Coating is a multi-layer prismatic coating that reflects over 99% of light entering the eye, producing a clear, bright image with accurate color reproduction.
