I use this for leveling rocks

I use this for leveling rocks. So far, so good. I spent 3 weeks smoothing out the black translucent Arkansas stone or what the oldtimers called the blue-black Arch stone. The hardest rock imaginable and it went through without exploding. I also used Atoma 400 and 800. So far they all work fine. I don't use them for sharpening, just straightening, so I can't comment on how well they sharpen steel.

Pros
  • Hand tool
Cons
  • Available in white only

Japanese top quality

These are very good stones - very flat, they cut great and after buying a 140 grit stone and comparing it to my extra super rough DMT diamond plate decided I decided to buy a full set of 340, 600, and 1200 grit Atoma diamond stones, which I use to sharpen kitchen knives, wooden planes, Japanese kana blades, and Japanese chisels. They work very well and after I finish my 1200 diamond stone I move on to my 3000 and then my 6000 whetstones, they are economical and very large which makes sharpening

Pros
  • Power & Hand Tools
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

Starts the fine grinding process. I would compare it to the Shapton 1000 ceramic but lacks Shapton's excellent feedback. I use this 1200 Atoma along with 400 and 140 Atomas on a couple of old Japanese chisels I bought off ebay and gave up over the years. They all required right angle rectangular bevels and a completely flat back. I skimmed the ground with a T-4 Tormek and then switched to a 140 Atoma on a Mk-2 Veritas fixture set at the same 25-30Β° angle as the T-4 to grind out the…
