Familiarize yourself with the frequencies you can use if you don't have a license. It's a decent radio for the money. Battery life is good. You are good at programming. Transmission and reception are good. This is a good backup system that can be used for emergency networks and local repeaters.

The only negative, if you can call it that, is that I don't see any significant difference in reception between the rubber ducky and a Tacticola antenna. I'm not sure about the transmission options.

I bought a set. When I received them and charged the batteries I found that the first one was defective, I replaced the batteries but the display didn't work. The radio made intermittent noises. The second radio looked fine. The postage is supposed to be paid by me, which seems wrong as they have to be sent back to China. Now I buy Made in USA.

I've bought and used many portable radios, say what you will, Baofeng radios get the job done. There are cheap fakes that spoil the name, but these are real radios. They programmed quickly and received stations without any problems. The antenna is a monster. I would use a shorter one for close-ups and monsters if needed. I took a short antenna as well as a long range survival antenna. I will test the range at the weekend.

Haven't had a chance to use them yet I will update this when needed. Update #1: The regular base antenna seems to work about twice as well as the fancy pants antenna. Maybe I need to adjust something to get the smooth, high-speed, low-drag motor to work properly. I will update if necessary. As the title suggests, it arrived a month ahead of schedule.

Favorite radios programmed with CHIRP with cable included, all accessories are great. But as stated in the reviews, fake ABBREE and Negoyo antennas probably didn't work. The (Baofeng) included antennas worked fine, but these other two antennas couldn't even connect to our local NOAA feed. It's pretty funny. I tried all four additional antennas on both radios in RX mode for the VHF and UHF bands. They all failed and ended up in the trash. I am not dissatisfied because Baofeng products are great.
