I have tried framing pictures in both hardwood and softwood with no success. The dots didn't come in with the tool and I went back to applying them with a dull spatula.
I was glad to get this tool until I tried it. The magnet is weak and the stopper will slip no matter how hard you tighten it. It just doesn't make the job as easy as expected so I'll be returning it for a refund.
I used to be a professional framer and learned with this tool. Before moving on to another job, my shop switched to an air powered framing tool that did both the corners and the back. Happy to find this tool to use in my home business! It works the way I remember it.
Wing nut cannot be tightened enough to adjust width. The gripping part just slides back and forth uselessly. (I'm not stupid: I used a similar tool for years before it broke.) It didn't even have a chance to break, lose a magnet or anything. Whether it's a defect or a bad design, it doesn't work because of it.
If I could give 0 stars I would. I bought it in August 2019. I've used this design before and never had a problem. When I found one at Revain I was excited to buy it even though I thought it was overpriced. I needed it for the first time today. I took it out of the box and tried to drive the pin into the tobacco stick. The wing nut was not tightened. As a last resort, I used pliers to try and tighten the wing nut and it wouldn't tighten around the stem. He kept sliding up and down so heโฆ
Anyone who uses this tool will agree that the underside of the magnet (where the nail head meets the frame) gets a lot of stress and mine snapped in two on the second use. Luckily . The tool itself is steel and after I glued the parts back into its cage it stays fine, but all of this could have been avoided with a harder steel magnet part. There is no exact guide as to how much force or depth the nail should go into the frame of the picture. But eventually I got used to it after 2-3 shotsโฆ
