These things work great with my 20-50 gallon Fluval hanging off the rear filter! Perfect size and very easy to clean when the filter runs a little slower. This pre-filter also reduces the number of times I have to break and clean the sponge in the main filter compartment.

These pre-filters are amazing and inexpensive, but their porosity is low and you have to rinse them out when they get clogged. I will say that clogging varies from tank to tank depending on the occupants of the tank and the feeding. I was able to get rid of bacterial blooms by adding the beneficial bacteria they offer.

These are very thin sponges, I was hoping for more open pores. Because everything is attached to them from the outside, not to the filter. When I try to clean all the dirt just falls back into the tank! I just need something that will catch large particles like fish in the filter tube.

Excellent pre-filter as I have red cherry shrimp and shrimp in my tank. This sponge is very thin so it protects my filter from sand that I pick up during maintenance. These sponges work very well. They are ideal for the Fluval Aquaclear20 HOB inlet filter. I also added an air intake extension to further submerge the air intake in the water. The roughness of these sponges is just right. They help filter the water and create an additional environment for beneficial bacteria to grow. Thus, only one end of the sponge is open. I bought these for a filter in my shrimp tank when I noticed my cherry shrimp females were starting to produce berries. Glad you did! Your babies are microscopic to begin with and the filter would suck them in right away!
