Canson Artist Series Mix Media Pad, 9” x 12”, Side Wire Bound - High-Quality 30 Sheets (400059774) Review

I love using this pattern paper. This gives me a "control group" so I can compare multiple media and brands with a stable type of paper. This is not good for normal watercolor use. But otherwise it's great.

This paper works great with watercolor, acrylic, and gel paints. I have used another brand at 140lbs but this 138lbs proved to be just as effective. I'd say it's cold pressed but I don't see it on the cover. The side of the tooth is smoother than I expected but responded to the color like a heavier mark. I will continue to use this for many projects.

This is VERY my favorite sketchbook. I dabble in all kinds of mediums, and the heavyweight paper in this album works with everything from crayons to inks to watercolors. It's big, but a reasonable size so I can take it to class or paint outside. The only medium I would avoid with this sketchbook is any type of marker. This paper absorbs ink like no other and you cannot smudge markers on it.

I can't ask for more from a drawing pad. Ring binding, excellent paper quality. The perforation isn't so flimsy that it rips everything, but not so coarse that you tear the sheet to remove it (fold it a couple of times to ensure a nice, smooth separation). This is my favorite drawing pad I have. in the last 25+ years. The versatility of the mixed materials, as well as the above properties, make it an indispensable part of my consumables.

I love super heavy paper. I was a bit disappointed with the covers. The front cover is basically no heavier than the sketch paper inside, and the sketchbook has two outer corners that are slightly curved but still usable. The back cover is stronger but still a lot thinner than we'd like. I think I'm spoiled by the Bee Paper Company's super deluxe mixed media artbooks that I have and would recommend Canson instead, although their pages aren't as heavy and thick.
