Jelly opacity. Neither the opacity of tube gouache nor the transparency of watercolors. Not a good solid color, no interesting liquid variations. Just a striped color that's a bit dead. If you want portability, you'd better buy a small case and load your trays with gouache tubes. Or, if you don't need compactness, get a tray pallet. Or buy a good watercolor set. The $34 experiment failed. Spare yourself the same lesson.

I'm a big fan of Caran D'ache products. The quality is amazing. Most of their colors have an excellent lightfastness rating (this is how long it takes for a color to fade over time when exposed to indoor lighting). Your color saturation is just fantastic. After searching for a "good" gouache kit and reading the reviews I settled on this kit. Basically I liked the idea with the pans, they're cleaner and so handy as they dry quickly, when you're done you can just close the lid and go. When I first saw this set of gouache I was surprised at the modest price considering it is a Caran D'Ache. Most Caran D'Ache art supplies are very expensive, with the exception of children's art supplies. And the manufacturer's retail price for this set is only fifty cents more than the Fancolor Tempera Children's Set, which includes the same tin, paints and brushes.
