Description of Carter M6588 Mechanical Fuel Pump

Built to meet or exceed OEM fit and reliability and 100% factory tested and approved. Ideal for vehicles with low pump pressure between 4 to 6 PSI. Less susceptible to contaminates because its located outside the fuel tank. In-Line pumps are driven by the camshaft, which effectively transfers fuel from the tank to the carburetor.

Terrible product. I will not use Carter fuel pumps in the future.

I have a vintage car and this is the second Carter fuel pump that has failed. The first squirted fuel onto the manifolds. The second retired due to an engine oil leak. Both failed within a short time. The second pump failed after about 45 days and less than 1000 miles. Very poor quality and my labor time doesn't count having replaced two Carter fuel pumps and now switched to a different brand of fuel pump.

Pros
  • Engineered to meet or exceed OEM and reliability and 100% factory tested and approved.
Cons
  • Empty

The fuel pump manufacturer had a good reputation for the product they sold

The pump housing itself was smaller than the pump I removed (which was over 35 years old) . The only issue, not a criticism, was that the padding that came with it was really paper thin. So I worked diligently on the gasket mold gasket. I installed the pump, started the engine, started the car, the fuel supply to the carburetor was fine, now I hope there is no oil leakage. The price was right, and as the title said, because I recognized the manufacturer, I bought it.

Pros
  • Inline pumps are driven by a camshaft that efficiently pumps fuel from the tank to the carburetor
Cons
  • Upgradeable

Will not fit 351 Cleveland

Will not fit 351C but very well made and quality part. I sent these back and got the correct Carter pump for the 351C instead. Revane said it was the right pump, but they were wrong. It's tricky to get to and you have to remove the power steering pump to get to the top bolt, but it fits perfectly. I suggest sealing this pump to the block with ultra black RTV silicone instead of the included gaskets to ensure you don't have any leaks. I also lubricated the pump lever prior to installation to…

Pros
  • Ideal for vehicles with low pump pressures of 4 to 6psi
Cons
  • High price
