Updated aquarium pumps and filters review

I ordered XY-180 which is a good filter at 10 grams. I took a chance and ordered the XY-2891 and I can't do the same to say. The outlet tube is smaller and releases large intermittent bubbles. In addition, the filter does not sink after 3 days.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something

Wrong design

All the foam filters I've seen send air through the center tube and blow back through the large tube to create some suction. The design of this filter is that it has a larger tube, but the bubbles just go around that tube instead of going through it. This leads me to believe that this is a cheap fake filter that doesn't work properly.

Pros
  • Good thing
Cons
  • No automatic

Air bubbles not soft enough for a 5 gallon betta

Fits my 5 gallon glass betta, but the pump (standard, non-adjustable flow, popular make/model) and hose size of this filter created bubbles that caused this were too large and strong for a small aquarium where bettas need calm water. Unfortunately I couldn't use this after 5 minutes of trial but I know I can't get it back.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Hard to tell

Works great for such a low price

Got this as a fallback. I wasn't sure how well this would work, but wow. Dirt that comes out when I squeeze it out in a bucket after changing the water and it's black. I use it for ten gallons. Most of the time I use it as the only filter, then just before a water change I shake the tank, put in a small mesh filter to get it all out, and after the water change I take out the mesh filter. I was very surprised by this cheap little thing. - You will need an air pump and an air hose.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options

These guys are really small

Honestly, it's not that easy to tell how much suction power these little devices have. One of them can't handle a 10 gallon tank alone, but a 5 gallon tank containing something like "fry" or a few "triplets" of guppies or a small school of cardinals will reach their limits. Anything below those levels and they do it pretty well. I have one of these in combination with a bubble filter in a 10 gallon tank with an 8" frontosa. She was there for about a month for treatment and the filters kept theโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Best in their niche
Cons
  • I'll add later
