Good reception even in dense forest/forest/forest

Buying an extended antenna is strongly discouraged; it should be. I have a metal telescopic antenna that goes out 51 inches. With the antenna extended, I was able to communicate at a distance of about 1 mile from another portable device, even in a low valley in the woods. These are quality radios, but with CB radios it all depends on the length of the antenna. I think on a flat surface with no obstructions these radios can easily go over 1 mile if you have an extended antenna. The transmissions

Better than the one I bought at Radio Shack

Bought this in 2003 to commute between my work town and hometown 2 Hours drive on I-40 through Arkansas, much highway portion. I picked up the truckers far enough ahead, 3-5 miles, that I could hear the conversation while the cops were moving. That has saved me many times. This radio picks up weather bands very well. I later bought a replacement radio from Radio Shack that absolutely sucked. Weather groups are unlikely to ever catch up, which is why I missed this radio. As late as 2012 I…

Pros
  • NOAA Weather & Emergency Radio - Be ready for storms and emergencies with NOAA radio built in
Cons
  • Slightly dented

Decent range for a portable with a clear mic and reception.

Transmission range exceeded my expectations, anecdotally reaching four miles on flat terrain with no excessive static electricity. CB is relative based on the quality of other radios. It's slim enough to fit comfortably in the driver's door map pocket and can run for hours without the need for nine AA batteries. is able to broadcast to even the police and fire departments on the widely used NOAA weather frequency, so your distress call is more likely to be heard.

Pros
  • Dual Watch - Simultaneous monitoring of two preselected channels
Cons
  • No power
