I have always avoided buying an apple knife as I thought I could easily cut an apple with a knife so why waste money on another gadget . However, there are times when you want to remove the core but don't want to cut into an apple or pear and it's a pain without such a device. It works great and I love that it opens up to make removing the core from the device much easier. In addition, the cross grip makes it easier to work with pressure than a straight grip.

It takes a bit of effort to slide it through an apple but I guess that's just because of how dense the apples are. You also need to be careful to point in the right direction, because when the apple is on the surface, the bottom of the core isn't always directly below the top. So you can't just push it down or you might miss part of the core. But then again, apples are like that, not the wine of this product.
