Yes this type of shoes needs to be snug on your foot but the ones I received were so snug that they came close to damaging/cutting off my circulation and I opted for half a size bigger. If you have a wide foot I highly recommend going up a half size for a snug yet comfortable fit. Now I wear my houses and they are more tolerant now but still too tight.
