Ford Explorer rear wiper arm Design flaw fixed

We have a 1999 Ford Explorer that we have used for over a decade. The rear wiper never worked properly as only part of the wiper blade touched the window as it arched over the glass. Tried different wiper blades, tried bending the wiper arm but still didn't work. Then I read that a few years after manufacture, Ford discovered a design flaw and changed the design. I ordered this new design Dorman wiper arm and now the rear wiper works great. I wish I had found him many years ago.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
  • Definitely bad product

Easy to install - even for beginners

Easy to install - even for beginners. This fixed the issue of the original wiper arm not touching the window. The hand is very close to OEM. Before replacing the lever, pull the old lever away from the stop on the tailgate and allow it to lower. This is how the NEW lever should fall off after installation. This keeps the arm under tension in the stowed position. If you install a new lever with the stops together, there may not be enough tension and it may not stow properly. Simply screw it into

Pros
  • Robust design
Cons
  • Don't know

I can get you out of trouble

Repair for my SUV that had a portion of the window "missing". My Ford Explorer had issues with the wiper blade not touching the entire rear window. As suggested by others on many websites, this Dorman product was easy to install and easy to fix. I can save you trouble. The rear wiper motor is splined and the OEM wiper arm is also splined. This replacement lever is smooth where it attaches to the engine. When you tighten the motor it makes its own splines. This is the correct installation…

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • No performance

UPDATE: After 28 months and three winter seasons, the steel arm has completely rusted. See attached photos. UPDATE: After 18 months and two winter seasons, the hand is showing rust through the paint. I've never seen rust on a wiper arm. Between that and the washer fluid port issue, I would recommend getting a different brand. Overall this is a well built unit that is easy to install. This fixed my problem with poor wiper contact on the rear window on a 2001 Explorer. The only complaint is that…

99 Ford Explorer Rear Wiper Problems

I have been having problems with the rear wiper on my 1999 Ford Explorer since I bought it over 10 years ago. The main problem was that the rear wiper never "fully touched" the glass. Apparently this is a very common problem on 1998 and 1999 Explorers. Well I've tried the new wiper blades and even flexed the wiper arm as many have suggested but to no avail. After reading numerous internet forums and discussions on the subject, I found that Ford knew/is aware of the missing glass contact issue…

Pros
  • Many positive vibrations
Cons
  • Frequency
