Makes a good circle, not good for hardwood

I used this to cut 1/2 inch thick ragweed maple. First I tried to cut through the entire board at once. I made a lot of heat and smoke and broke one of the pieces. Then I started cutting through only 1/3 the thickness of the board at a time. It was still giving off a lot of smoke and heat so I stopped often to let the drill cool down. Then I went and bought a jigsaw to clean up the rough edges. I think this tool works best on softer, thinner woods. It creates a nice round circle, so in theโ€ฆ

Works but does not replace bit

Most hobbyists use drill bits on power drills to cut clean holes but I don't have a drill bit. I have a cordless Dremel 800. I was looking for a way to cut clean 2" holes without using a hole saw and to add versatility to my tool, so I ordered this cutting guide. My tool fits in well and the depth can be adjusted, but the guide design is a serious limitation. As long as there was enough clearance to rotate the tool around the axis of the guide, the holes were clean with some burrs. I tested itโ€ฆ

Good for speaker cutouts

I used this to cut holes for subwoofers in a subwoofer enclosure. It worked quite well, but it's not perfect. The results were somewhere between a jigsaw and a router. I drilled a pilot hole for the center pivot and also for the cutting attachment so I didn't have to insert it at an angle or anything. With MDF he could take off 3/8" of material at a time, but I had to increase the RPM on the dremel, which I don't usually like. The drill bit seemed to prefer cutting clockwise rather thanโ€ฆ

Limited use, needs revision

The plastic case snapped at the threads on first use (and I didn't over tighten it). The second fared better, but its use was very limited. Difficult to cut through plywood. I think 1/8 inch is all you can use with that. Movement is difficult to modulate. Too slow and the tree burns, too fast and the bat gets stuck. Same thing when used with an ABS sheet, only the plastic melts and the cut quality is mediocre to say the least. I can cut aluminum sheet faster with a hacksaw. Holes for recessedโ€ฆ

A good cheap alternative if you don't have a drill or router

I used it to cut holes in a 1/8" sheet of MDF to use as a template and two 1/4" thick sheets of 6061 aluminum. You really need to make sure all the screws are tight or you'll end up with a lot of wobbling. Don't use this if you really need to use circles. The actual hole is cut more accurately than the rest of the material. You're more likely to ruin circles than holes. Do this slowly and hold the tool steady, otherwise the Dremel bit may catch on the material and ruin the cut. The drill thatโ€ฆ
