🏜️ Exo Terra Sand Mat Mini: The Ultimate Solution for Desert Terrarium Substrate Review

Love this for my daughter's bearded dragon but really blows it up when you first get it. The Amazon box was loaded with excess sand so it was scattered everywhere before opening. However, we did find that it hardens after the first wash and stops the loose sand after it loses some, so there are some bare spots that came up shortly after opening.

A+ for looks. This makes my bearded dragon's terrarium very cool. Easy to cut to fit a 55 gallon tank. BUT. It's literally sand glued to a foam mat. Plan to open (and cut if you must) from the outside because it's a terrible mess. And I worry about how well it will clean. The game can end as soon as the bearded man poops. I think over time it will stink.

The product looked good out of the box, took it out and unwrapped it and a handful of sand was left at the bottom of the bag with bare spots on the carpet. Something that probably should be sold lower or not at all! I wanted something that was slightly used at this price just under new, but when I got this I had to lightly wash off a quarter of the calcium dust mat. We also use this for our bearded dragons.

While this is the best cage option for lizards, it does have its drawbacks. Stones on it fall off easily. Even when removed and washed, stains remain on the surface. You can wash and soak it, but of course you can't rub stains because that will remove all surfaces. Also, the stones on the carpet were varnished or coated to match the surface. After a few washes, the stones will turn a clean whitish color that doesn't match the carpet's finish. Although it looks clean, it looks great.

My beard loves this rug! The only problem is that unpacking leaves a mountain of sand on your carpet, so unpack it from the outside. I actually bought two of these to get my bearded one's diarrhea off of and let him dry while he poops on the clean one I put in his cage. That's why I don't put a clean, wet surface in his terrarium, which can be very bad for his health because it creates too much moisture. He might even die if I did, and that would be positive. When I received it I was immediately concerned as I might shake a lot of 'gravel' in this package. When I opened it, many things fell out. I took out the mat and found many areas that weren't covered as you can see in the first picture. Since I already got rid of the sand in my beard armor I had to use it. Overall the product looks pretty good in your aquarium, the only problem is that you will definitely be worried if it's a bearded dragon to draw one out of the pebbles and eat them up and become a hit that's no good. As soon as I put my bearded dragon in a cage he started trying to eat the pebbles, some wouldn't come off and the little ones didn't bother me too much.
