Too much substrate leaves a lot of residue in the water bowl. These are good sized pieces of bark, up to half an inch. I haven't experienced any problems with bugs as I've seen reports with other brands. I also put some peat moss on top after soaking in water to keep moisture needed at different times of the year. I also recently changed the landscape to use large flat rocks around the water/swimming bowl to keep the substrate a little further from the water and less likely to make a mess.

I actually needed mulch for a tree I just bought and didn't need a huge bag. Straw was just expensive as I have had reptiles in the past (and have worked with and currently live with them) and I know Fluker's is a great brand it was perfect. I bought this spruce bark to add to the potting soil for my very expensive Hoya plants. I really liked it initially, the pieces were a good size for what I needed it for and it was very affordable.
