General Finishes Water Based Gallon Review

I'm obsessed with this top coat! It leaves such a smooth matte finish that I love. However, my first few uses were disastrous. I used a foam brush as they recommend and it left lots of dry white blisters. Now I always use a synthetic brush and apply thin transparent layers. If you see white specks when applying, it will be white once dry, so make sure your layers are thin and appear translucent to begin with. If so, then it's amazing!

I really like this product and it's easy to use. I used it over chalk paint. It's almost imperceptible on colored items, but even after following the instructions and watching the instructions on YouTube, I had a very hard time with my table and chairs, which I painted black. White milk stains did not disappear on drying. It actually made sanding difficult and took off some of the color. I used sponge applicator brushes so maybe a brush would have been better. This smooth surface is amazing. I am a furniture remodeler and this is the best product I have ever used. I wanted to keep the chalk finish of the cabinet I'm working on. I started with the General Finishes milk color (it's an amazing color by the way) and then searched for a long time for a top coat that would keep the chalky appearance of the color. We bought this paint to use as a protective sealer over face chalk paint. We wanted to keep the same matte finish that chalk paint has. We originally used a polyurethane with a matte Minwax finish, but it gave significantly more gloss than the chalk paint and was slightly different in color as well.
