I've used it without a filter but then the water seeps out too quickly and you end up with a weak coffee that's difficult to rinse out afterwards. I like how it folds up very small and flat - great for camping/travelling. However, you must have a cup/container wide enough to attach it to or the coffee will spill out. I have a tall thermos which I prefer because it keeps the coffee warm/hot for hours. But its opening is too narrow.
