I work a lot with small engines and have never had a tachometer so I did a little research and settled on this one. I have no complaints. I don't use an hour meter, but the tachometer helps a lot. I assume that's true.

I installed this on my Kohler 9.5hp log splitter. It's been outside under a tarpaulin for over a year and it's still working perfectly. The display dims when exposed to hotter, bright sun but returns when it cools down. This is typical and not a defect. The number of revolutions per minute is displayed when the engine is running and the number of operating hours when the engine is switched off. I bought this for my mower this spring. It's outside all the time, and now that it's autumn, the display is damp and one of the numbers is barely legible (almost blank). I bought this for my motorcycle which is indoors and rarely used in wet weather so I hope it will last longer. I like seeing the RPM, but it only updates every second or two, which isn't critical in my applications, but I wish it was better.

If you're looking for a quality mini hour meter/tachometer, this isn't it. This is a cheap POS. If you want quality, get one of the Tiny Tach models for over $50. However, this device really works. it's cheap, value for money. works, but I bought mine last September, and then it worked for a couple of weeks until the fall. Now that I've stripped the mower out after winter, there was moisture in the wheelbarrow and the display was dead. I figured out how to remove the backing, but the battery was welded and glued inside. Why do they claim that the battery is replaceable? Well I guess it is if you're as determined as I am.
