If soldering is just a hobby and you are a beginner you will be good to start with, you can't go wrong with Hakko! Replaceable tips, no strange smell/smoke inside.
I have been using Hakkko soldering irons for many years, particularly the Hakko Dash. This Hakko FX650 iron is a new model in the Dash series and it looks just as good. I just wish this new model would allow you to replace the heating element if it breaks or fails, but you can't, unlike the old Hakko Dash. And the quality of this iron is quite good, but could be a little better, I've been using it normally for the past 2 years.
My old and basic 15 watt Radioshack soldering iron didn't get hot enough to connect 20 gauge wire, so I bought this from the Micro Center to replace it. The Hakko fx-650 is also 15w so I was skeptical but it turns out to be MUCH hotter than my old one despite drawing the same amount of power. He was able to connect 20 gauge wire instantly and it heats up within a minute. In addition, it is much lighter and shorter, making it easier to hold and manoeuvre.
