I've always avoided cheap pH meters because they tend to be short lived and give accurate readings. I am very happy with this meter as such. So far it's been working very well, I keep recalibrating it just to make sure it's accurate, and other than showing 7.1 when it's actually 7.0, that's the only discrepancy I see and write dovetail this to not blowing out with compressed air before changing caps, i think if you just recalibrate more often, if you use a lot then everything will be fine, so…

I would say it's almost impossible to use the meter with any kind of reliability without buying a buffer solution. I have this pen, cheaper, more expensive, blue lab and also a wall unit. They all have temperature readings, which is a must have for any pH pen when using it on plants. My tap water reads around 7-7.1 on this meter and in the blue lab. Oddly, after use and thorough mixing (ph 5.9), this meter consistently reads 0.5-1 more than the blue lab.
