I have used internal filters and they are very scarce. I changed them and it improved a bit. I found these filters recommended to me by my favorite fisherman on YouTube and tried one of them. Now all my tanks use them. My shrimp love them. The fins of my tail are safe. My triplets climb it. Even snails and crabs. I used shrimp bio medium and charcoal for a South American aquarium. Both media work great with these filters.

I have literally 7 of these and will probably add more. Although I have other forms of filtration in my fish/axolotl tanks, I prefer sponge filters because they keep the tank clean. They also move easily to fit the QT tank. I also only recently discovered that I can put crushed coral in containers. I usually have lava in it, but I also have low pH from the tap, but my canister filters don't have room for crushed coral, so they save space too.

The jaws still seem a little uneven to me, one is a little higher than the other and no matter how I try to adjust it, it's a little off. But the difference is minimal, when you buy a sponge filter you choose functionality over looks. And it works great. I am in the process of upgrading my angelfish/discus hatchery from other square/round bottom and angle filters to these. My city water has a stable tap pH of 7.2, the lime hardness is extremely low. If you have a 10 gallon tank that is not overloaded with fish this is the perfect filtration setup.
