I bought four medium sized ice packs and saw that bulging forms on the first freeze. I have a vague impression that the freezing process, starting on the outside and gradually moving inwards, causes the liquid to flow in one direction and form a bulge. This can apparently be remedied by thawing the bump with hot water and immediately refreezing it. Place the bag in the freezer horizontally, not vertically. These are GOOD quality freezer blocks, whatever you call them. Igloo is a decent brand and for the most part I haven't had any issues with their stuff. They're well made, filled just enough to allow for reasonable changes in volume due to temperature, and I think they'll last a long time in a decently insulated space.
