If you have a higher capacity canister filter without performance adjustment, you may think that this lily tube will not work because air bubbles are sucked in from the top, but actually , that is because the Slots in the bottom are not big enough for the underwater part of the air intake. I recommend that you drill some holes in the bottom where there is plastic to allow more water to enter from below and thus reduce the amount of air being sucked in.

The problem is that the aquarium has to be filled very close to the edge in order for it to work at all. The floating surface skimmer handle is too long so it will break suction when set low. This can be fixed by cutting the plastic tubing. It still doesn't work as a surface skimmer unless the water is only a few inches from the top edge. Unfortunately, I need the water level just below the effective range of the surface skimmer. I will buy the stainless steel type so I can switch accordingly…

This stylish item works as advertised and provides a conventional drain for an external filter which will remove most (but not all) of the surface film. One problem is that the bend in the hose is too tight for an aquarium with plastic rims. I had to cut off a piece of the inner plastic rim to fit it.
