Does what it should.

What can I say? It's a piece of ammonium chloride, it weighs about half a pound, it will tin your soldering iron tip when it stops getting wet. Anyone who says it doesn't work must have done it wrong. To be clear, this is not a substitute for regular handpiece maintenance. You still clean it with a standard brass Q-tip and a damp sponge as needed. You will still tin the tip with solder if you don't use it for a few minutes. However, sometimes your tip gets dirty and/or builds up oxidation. The…

A few years ago I bought a 1960's American Beauty 100 watt soldering iron at a trade show for a few dollars. It turned out to be almost new except for the oxidized/corroded tip. The tip was original, with a high quality iron coating, but one side was completely black oxidized and the solder would not stick to it. I heated the iron to operating temperature, melted a dab of solder onto a block of ammonium nitrate and rolled the tip over the block with the dab of solder for about 5 minutes until…

I'm glad I discovered this sooner rather than later.

I bought one of these to get rid of a spot on a tip that refused to be wetted with solder and another tip that was badly oxidized. I liked it so much that I ended up buying another one to keep at home (the first unit was taken to work and left there). The first block I bought was a bit thinner than the second (about 5-7mm - the block should fill the entire box) so I'm not sure if quality control missed this block but it does not enough to survive the trouble extracting the block and more. I had
