Review on Highly Efficient Large Sal Ammoniac Tinning Block - Expert-Grade Solution for Exceptional Results by Mike Carter

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I'm glad I discovered this sooner rather than later.

I bought one of these to get rid of a spot on a tip that refused to be wetted with solder and another tip that was badly oxidized. I liked it so much that I ended up buying another one to keep at home (the first unit was taken to work and left there). The first block I bought was a bit thinner than the second (about 5-7mm - the block should fill the entire box) so I'm not sure if quality control missed this block but it does not enough to survive the trouble extracting the block and more. I had a few tips at work that were badly oxidized. , one of which is gloss black around the tip and the other is mostly black (as shown). It took a while, but I was able to wet both tips with solder as if nothing had happened (I was very surprised by the first tip). Unfortunately, upon completion, my phone's camera chose to focus on the block instead of the tip. Depending on the iron, it may be necessary to rub the tip against the block as directed in the instructions (in other cases, such as the Hakko FX-888, you may want to roll the tip over the block), but don't give Don't give up if it doesn't seem to be working, just keep doing it. What I noticed with my Weller WES51 was that there wasn't much smoke, but the Hakko FX-888 was definitely smoking (don't inhale). The other iron I have at work (origin of tip pictured) is the Weller WTCPT and it made the block interesting to use as the 600 and 700 degree tips didn't produce as much smoke as the 800 -Grade Tips. The tips I cleaned also got wet with solder where the tip should end up (for WTCPT tips) - a small side effect to watch out for if it's important to you (I don't care). during use. , the block is crumbling on the sides of the tip, and while that's a bit annoying, it's not worth deducting a star (half a star at most, maybe). Definitely worth every penny I spent on both.
