I make amigurumi (knitting toys) and the large needle is very useful for sewing and closing my work. I was sewing on a button the other day and found that a medium sized needle fits the buttonholes perfectly, but you can use yarn instead of thread. Needles break after 9 out of 10 of these, 10 in a day or two ( I lace leather and these needles were very brittle) I bought a pack of these yarn needles. I use plastic needles for weaving ends in crochet and knitting projects. The problem is that the mold marks on the side of the needles continue to cling to and pull on the thin yarn.
