The recording surface does not stand up to it.

After a long test, here are some field reports: Advantages: + The carpet is magnetic and does not lose its strength. Cons: - The writing surface just doesn't stick. The erasable marker penetrates and saturates the top layer. The glossy top coat comes off when you try to erase the erasable marker. This leads to the first problem (above) - After a while, the edges of the top surface (white mesh) start to separate from the magnetic layer.

Very good mat for small projects

Very good mat for small projects; but read the dimensions carefully because it was smaller than I thought from the pictures. The magnetic surface is great for grabbing screws so they don't fall to the ground and get lost. I bought this to help me with a laptop repair as after removing all the case screws on the bottom of the laptop inevitably one or two will not come out. A vigorous shake of the laptop across a carpet will usually dislodge the screws, but they used to bounce off the desk and…

The magnet isn't super strong as other reviews have stated, but it is.

The magnet isn't very strong as stated by other reviews but it kept the phone's screws from moving when I replaced the battery and screen assembly. It also allowed for a smooth surface to work on. Excellent product and good value for money. Update: I've used it a few times already to fix phone and laptop screens and it works really well for holding screws in place and keeping track of which parts go where. Ideal for iPhone repair!

I bought this for iPhone repair. It does a great job of holding small screws in place so they don't get lost while you work. I usually use repair guides on iFixit.com that have step-by-step instructions. I love that you can write the step number on each box so you can remember where the screws go in that box when you assemble the unit. Others note that this mat does not hold larger screws like those used in computers. I agree it won't. However, this mat is not designed for screws of this size…
