Good for nitrifying bacteria, denitrifying credits.

Matrix seems to be a good nitrifying biomedium, so I keep it in several freshwater tanks. However, I am very skeptical of the claims of support for denitrification. I have this as a test in several methods; 1) in a tank-only bag, 2) in a cooktop bag, and 3) in canister filters. The second aquarium has some plants and I am sure that the plants absorb all the nitrates. In the 1st aquarium I do 50% toilet every two weeks because of nitrates. In the third (largest) tank I have about 2.5-3 liters of

Real matrix, NOT garden gravel.

I have been using the Sechem matrix for about two years now. In my opinion this is the best biomaterial available for home aquarists. I have never had a problem with mini bikes or losing a cycle in any way since using it. You get a much larger surface area for bacteria to grow on than any other medium I've used. Today I received my second bottle of Matrix from Amazon (other bottles were bought from local fish shops). After reading some of the reviews on Revain I saw some people talking about…

Pros
  • The matrix can be used in any filter and is particularly effective in an external filter
Cons
  • Protection

Seachem sells snake oil! Do not buy!

As others have said, many of the stones contained in this product are not the porous material advertised. About 1/3 of all the rocks in the container are a mix of granite and obsia or lower quality porous material, which is absolutely ridiculous. I'm usually a fan of Seachem. They make great products like Purigen and Prime but this product is rubbish. Seachem can easily separate waste rock from porous rock because porous rock is lighter. Some of these stones will even float when first dipped in

Pros
  • Diameter: With a diameter of approx. 10 mm, each liter of matrix has the same surface area as 170 liters of plastic balls! The matrix provides both an outer and an inner macroporous surface.

Seachem Matrix is an excellent habitat for the colonization of both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria that are so important to good water chemistry and the health of the aquarium inhabitants. I've found many users complaining about receiving a fake product and to be honest I thought I had one too. I called Seachem and got the news. Here's what I found out: Matrix is a natural product derived from minerals. The mineral exhibits natural variations in size and color. When mining, black obsidian

Pros
  • Macropores: These Matrix macropores are the ideal size to support both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, allowing Matrix to simultaneously remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite in the same filter.
Cons
  • Unbelievable Price
