Not installed yet, but after testing it I was initially very skeptical about the design. I trust her. When the thermostat reaches the set temperature, the black piston goes down and closes the bypass so the oil cooler gets full flow, not just partial flow. If the thermostat doesn't open, the oil cooler will still work, but not as efficiently. I would upload pictures but Revane doesn't like the format of my camera.

I was in a bind and needed this to get my new oil temp and pressure gauge running for a day. Plate. Websites and pictures do a terrible job of conveying where they are on this and the standard sandwich plate which I assume only has one. does not reach the desired temperature when driving on the freeway.
