Not soft like lipstick but not hard like wax. It requires a little pressure and they blend perfectly when the brush is slightly dampened with water. Loved these instant oil pastels. There is a small learning curve as they are very soft. But once you learn how to use them, they're just a lot of fun. You can dilute them with water or leave them for a bolder look. just don't be too bossy. Every now and then I put them in the fridge for about 10 minutes and got really great lines. For the price, they're a steal. I will buy again. I also bought beads and they were just as much fun. Actually. After writing this I am planning another order!
