NOT AS RECOMMENDED Optics

I bought this microscope for my granddaughter. Firstly, the description states that this scope comes with both 20x and 50x lenses. This is not the case - 10x and 20x lenses. The title on the page says the lenses are 10x and 20x, but unfortunately I couldn't read the name. I only read the main part of the description. Second, photos showing enlarged images in ads are simply misleading. I am a cell biologist and I can assure you that this microscope is not capable of producing images like the…

Pros
  • Sturdy workmanship
Cons
  • Expensive

Excellent microscope for beginners. The adjustment knob on the first one we received was broken, but Amazon was quick to replace it. Easy to use for our 6 year old. There is an option for top or rear lighting, which is convenient. We had a lot of fun looking at the crystals and making our own plant slides. The only thing that confuses me is that while the Artemia experiment is fun, it's hard to explain to a kid that the shrimp are about to die. Also part of the shrimp experiment is you put…

Obviously the returned item was sold as new.

Extremely disappointed as this was obviously a returned item that was sold as new. It lacks the 10 foil covers that are so necessary for our biology curriculum to examine our own samples. The bottle of Artemia was almost empty. And it was obvious the lens had been used as it was already installed and their empty pouches were in the box. We live in a very rural area, so walking to the big city to chase slides is definitely not a piece of cake. After reading and reading many reviews I chose this…

Don't buy until the transilluminator is fixed!

Please do not purchase this until the transmitted light issue is resolved. As other reviewers have pointed out (and I should have listened), the illumination at the base used for viewing microscope slides is very bright and does not diffuse well. It is simply NOT used for slides as submitted. Reflected light mode (i.e. looking at solid objects with a light source from above) is fine. A quick and messy fix to the problem is to place a few layers of tissue paper under the frosted glass diffuser…

Product and customer service 5 STARS!

My daughter loves science and is learning more about insects and plants - non-fiction books on these subjects are on her shelf. So we thought this would be the perfect Christmas present for her. (7 1/2 years old at the time) It was a huge hit! She researched so many things she discovered outside during the seasons. She has started an experiment with brine shrimp and we are waiting for it. The microscope isn't as powerful as you might recognize from high school biology class, but the…

It's good at 20x magnification

This small microscope is ideal for beginners. The included booklet is mostly about slide viewing, but things get better at 20x magnification with top lighting for viewing solid objects. I placed a stalk of Coleus flowers underneath and saw pollen in the anthers and pollen attached to the stigma leaves. You can examine tiny flowers in their entirety or parts of larger flowers. Small insects and leaf margins are other good specimens. I think this will work well for observing algae and some…

Pros
  • Everything is great!
Cons
  • All right

The National Geographic Dual Microscope has an amazingly clear lens for an inexpensive microscope. The microscope has 10x and 25x objective lenses that are easily interchangeable. You simply pull the lens to remove it and the next lens is inserted. The distance between the two heads is adjustable, but there is no diopter compensation here. They have a coarse focus knob to set the distance from the sample you are looking at. You have two different light sources, one above your field of view and…

Pros
  • Comfortable to use
