🐷 Norpro Cast Iron Pig Shaped Bacon Press: Efficient Wood Handle, 8.5in/21.5cm Review

I love this pig so much I bought it for myself, my daughter and a friend. I keep it on the kitchen table; I smile every time I see this. And it turns out really crispy bacon.

I love my little bacon maker. It reminds me of what my mom had growing up and "helping" her with baking (mostly sticking my fingers in the batter etc.). When you get too many visitors, all those who stop buying always comment on its charm.

This press is so small it won't hold three slices of bacon, even when the strips are cut in half. The "cute" piglet markings on the underside make it difficult to clean the press. The wooden handle dangles. Even after the advertised "bake in" it still smelled of metal and left a gray residue on a cleaning rag. NOT a good buy but my dustbin liked it.

What don't you like? It's cute and works well. Easy to care for, treat like any other cast iron product. Keep in mind that the shape can be a bit awkward when flattening multiple pieces of bacon (compared to a square or rectangular shape). Something I didn't mind giving up in exchange for cuteness. I think this would make a great gift for new homeowners/renters or cast iron fans.

This little pig is great for making bacon or smash burgers. I recommend seasoning it in the oven, just remove the little handle and put it in the oven at 500° after brushing it with olive oil a few times and let it cool until it turns black and the thing stays rust free and washed with that can become soap and it will last almost forever. When you reattach the small handle, lubricate the threads with some vegetable oil.

Wish the overall girth was about 2 inches larger. This is an excellent meat press for frying meat in a pan. I haven't tried it on the grill yet. Tried a BLT bacon press tonight - works great! We love our bacon nice and crispy, and this little press does a great job and seems to speed up the cooking time (maybe because the cast iron "holds the heat" while the bacon cooks?). The bacon was crispy and tasty; The press prevents the bacon from curling and saves you the endless work of turning the bacon over and over when cooking it the traditional way.
