Description of Efficient Axle Shaft Seal Installer for Ford 1998-2004 F-250/350/450/550 – OTC 6695

Works on 1998-2004 Ford F-250 F-350 F-450 and F-550 4X4s having the vacuum-operated front axle. Correctly installs the seal onto the axle shaft and into the wheel knuckle. Prevents front hub vacuum leaks that would cause the 4WD to not engage.

Worth the Money - Bearings and Seals

I hate spending $80 on a tool that can only be used for 15 minutes. However, this made it easier to press the seals and reset the axles. I'm sure that by purchasing it I've saved myself a few days of headaches and misery. From one curmudgeon to another, just buy this tool and save the swear words for your next visit to the mother-in-law.

Pros
  • Weight
Cons
  • Crumpled Packaging

You will need this tool when installing front axle seals. If you don't you will most likely damage the seal and your vacuum locked hubs will not work with the switch in the cab as the hubs will leak and not hold the vacuum. This tool is expensive but essential if you want your vacuum lockers to work after changing the axle seals.

Pros
  • High test results for grip and durability
Cons
  • Weight

Excellent performance on bearings and seals

Not the cheapest tool you will ever buy but was very solidly built. You really have to tap that seal to get it in. I used an 8 pound hammer to hammer the seal onto the shaft and used a plumber to set the seal into the housing. This sets the seal to the exact depth so there is no guessing how far it needs to be seated on the shaft. Again, it's not cheap, but cheaper than $100 an hour for a mechanic (who may or may not have a similar tool) and about the price of a seal if you mess it up by…

Rescuer! on Axle Shaft

If you want to make large gaskets that put pressure on the front knuckles, buy this tool or find a friend who has it. It has a machined step to set the correct depth. too deep and it will chafe the back. too small and you will have a hard time putting the block storage back in place. The price of the part is the equivalent of an hour's work in the store, so you're always ahead of the money no matter how you look at it. Another nice feature is the lip on the other end to set the perfect axle…

Get comfortable with the pressure, take your time. Or buy them again.

The tool helped, but for some reason it didn't seat the oil seal evenly. And when I tried to install it further, it bent the gasket. I tried it twice and it bent the seal twice. Had to buy it again, not satisfied. . Then I tried again, but a little more cautiously, and getting the pressure straight just didn't work. Once I realized it wasn't going straight in, I had to remove the tool and gradually drive it in. I'm not sure if it was me or a tool to tell you the truth, but it was meant to make…

Worked great for my 2003 Ford Excursion 7.3 4X4

This made it easy to fit the gasket onto the outer axle and then in turn put the axle back into the banjo hub. When you consider how much money you can save by doing it yourself, the tool is a steal even if you never use it again. I've seen people online make PVC tools or pipe flanges and nipples (with loops) but I can tell you it's reassuring to have a tool that fits and you can really thresh and I'm sure that the work becomes smoother. At least one of my seals required a decent amount of…

Buy - no problem!

I can't imagine installing the axle seals on my 02 Super Duty without this tool. It seems expensive at first, but think about how much you paid for the original gaskets, and then consider the significant chance you could destroy one of these while trying to make your own tool from a combination of galvanized water pipes. It's easier now than when I bought it after seeing how great it works to get the job done. Once you know how hard you have to slam this tool to install the shaft seal, you'll…

It's beautifully made and a real tool, but it almost lasts.

Wow, that's a big piece of steel. It's beautifully made and a real tool, but almost needs a second person to hold it while in use. When converting axles to Dana 60 axles on Ford F350 and other large trucks, you need to fit this very expensive special bearing. Seal. Not only does the seal have to be pressed against the axle shaft to a certain depth, but it is a complex seal with bearings inside the seal that move, so you have to apply even pressure to all assemblies when pressing. On the…

About the cost of a gasket - buy or rent

If you don't care about automatic four wheel drive and are willing to jam the hubs every time then I think you can use one of these homemade PVC installations Do you see on YouTube. For the price of a fill, however, you get a tool that keeps you from ruining your fills as you fill them. I have a 2002 F350 Powerstroke. You have to hit this gasket hard to get it fully seated on the axle. If you don't fully install it, you won't be able to reinstall the axle into the diff. right and your dust seal

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • No automatic
