This tool cuts cage installation time by at least half. You can also use to remove races on some hubs. Paid off on first job.

Universal Cup Installer OTC 7180

I have installed cups from 3.8 to 4.5 inches. I couldn't find any other products claiming this. I've made a few and the OTC 7180 made me a stock installer. A hard hammer worked well, but not necessarily. I'm not a pro, just someone who would like to be able to maintain things like this to keep working.

Pros
  • Helps repair damage caused by do-it-yourself methods
Cons
  • Poorly thought out

Cons

This item is backordered from each local supplier.

This part is stocked at every local supplier in my area. Also these sellers want 300-450.00 for this tool that Amazon sold me for 240.00. I've been using this tool for years, it works exactly as advertised and is totally worth the money if you need to change two axles or more cups in one shift. Your hands will thank you in the morning.

Pros
  • For use on 11,000 to 50,000 lb axles; Adjusts to 3-5/8" to 6-1/2" OD cups - Universal tool replaces up to 30 individual drives
Cons
  • No instructions

the best tool of its kind

I look after a fleet of 140 class 7 wagons and change bearing shells an average of six axles per month. I haven't found a better tool for the task than the OTC 7180. I modified mine to remove the cups, which prevents the iron hubs from having deforming sliding impacts from a clogged straight drift. My only issue with the tool is that the roller pins that hold the jaws wear out fairly quickly. I replaced them with class 8 screws and have had no problems since. The OTC contains a full list of…

Pros
  • Simply adjust the jaws to the inner diameter of the cup and lock, put on a new cup, insert it into the hole and hammer it in - done - done
Cons
  • I don't remember, but there was something
